This website is for anyone who wants to improve their scuba diving. Whether you are new to scuba or a veteran diver we hope you will find useful content here.
Scuba Smarter was founded to solve a problem: divers are getting hurt and dying too frequently. Our focus is on diving in Puget Sound in the Seattle, Washington area. Diving here is rewarding but not easy. Scuba in the sound challenges us with cold water, limited visibility, restrictive gear, and heavy kit. There are non-obvious risks in our Salish Sea that divers do not face in warm, clear, calm tropical waters.
What can go wrong? Buoyancy control is lost. Buddies get separated. Gas runs out. Too much weight is worn. Ascents to the surface happen faster than is safe. Unpracticed skills atrophy (mask clearing anyone?). Margins of safety are eroded. Serious pre-existing medical conditions are rationalized away. Small problems become serious when they pile on top of each other.
Too many certified divers come back safely from each dive only through luck - not through preparation, skill, or appropriate planning. Many divers don't know what they are doing wrong. We should know, we used to dive that way too.
In scuba, what you don't know CAN hurt you. We believe better diver education is part of the solution.
Good dive education equips you with a deep understanding and practiced competency in essential skills like weighting, buoyancy, trim, propulsion, gas management, decision-making, buddy contact, teamwork, situation awareness, and communication. These skills will make you a better diver - wherever you choose to blow bubbles.
